If we can all agree on one thing, it’s that 2020 was a crazy year…a year full of sorrow, but also a year that brought hope for 2021 and the years beyond. This month, we celebrate Black History Month. Black History Month 2021 comes during a time that America is having an awakening, after a year of reckoning. It is a month when we celebrate the many momentous contributions that Black people have made to American society.

The honoring of these contributions’ dates to 1925, when the historian, Carter G. Woodson, and the organization he founded, conceived Negro History Week. The 1st celebration of this event occurred in February 1926.  In 1976, President Ford officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Many other countries around the world also dedicate a month to celebrate Black History.

It is important to remember that while Black History Month helps to bring awareness to prominent Black and African Americans throughout history, it also is a remembrance of the struggle for freedom and equality that Black people have fought for in the past, the present, with hopes to change the future. The histories, stories, and voices of black people should be centered as we look to move forward in addressing the many systemic racial injustices that are still pervasive and entrenched in our society.

Black History month is a time to honor the past and to remember that the history of black people in the U.S. is American History. We should celebrate and reflect on this history, the hardships, the joys, and the progress as we continue our journey of equality for all people.

At Chegg, we believe that inclusion does not mean exclusion. We have an intentional focus to ensure Chegg is an environment where all employees feel welcome and have a sense of belonging. Where employees can be their best authentic selves in support of our Student First mission.

Under Culture, Belonging & Diversity, we have initiatives that will roll out over the next 5 years to make Chegg as broadly a diverse an organization as the student population that we serve. Over this next year, there will be increased support of our Employee Resource Groups, which provide a network of support and education to our employees, implementing a dedicated recruiting strategy to support increased recruiting and hiring of diverse talent, and reviewing our policies and practices so that they are equitable among all employees.

We are committed to Culture, Belonging & Diversity at Chegg. It is a commitment that extends throughout Chegg as a whole—from our Executive Leadership to the Individual Contributor. It’s up to all of us that we do our part, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us. Happy Black History Month!
